What does it mean to eat a balanced diet?

A balanced diet means eating foods from all food groups, in the right amounts and ratios, so that the body can supply itself with the necessary macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, fats) and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals).

 

A healthy diet should meet the following principles*:

Adequacy

A healthy diet should supply sufficient amounts of all nutrients, fiber and energy needed by the body.

 

Balancedness

The nutrients taken should be in balanced proportions, not excluding or replacing one nutrient with another.

 

Calorie control

The amount of energy that is taken with food should be such that an optimal weight is maintained.

 

Moderation

Do not abuse the unwanted products such as salt, sugar, alcohol and fats.

 

Diversity

To supply the necessary nutrients, take a variety of foods, avoid monotony in the diet.

So far, no food product has been discovered that contains all the nutrients necessary for the proper functioning of the body, which is why long-term consumption of monotonous foods is undesirable.

It is for this reason that in order to meet their nutritional needs, each person must take a variety of products that contain different macro- and micronutrients.

 

What is a diet?

A diet, on the other hand, is a mostly restriction-based weight loss plan where we can eat certain foods and avoid others.

When the diet is not prepared by a specialist, individually tailored to our needs, state of health, daily life, physical activity, set final goal, etc. factors, as well as not being specifically linked to a specific disease, may harm the body more than lead to a positive long-term result.

 

Disadvantages of following most types of diets:

  • Limiting major food groups;
  • The bad combination between foods;
  • A sudden change in weight during weight loss diets can lead to numerous side effects and damage to our physical health;
  • Loss of more muscle mass and fluids and significantly less fat, which is actually the ultimate goal;
  • Lack of strength and energy;
  • Difficult to follow over a long period of time due to the lack of variety;
  • An increase in the levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) in the body during the observance of part of the diets causes subsequent overeating and rapid recovery of the already lost pounds or, in more cases, even the accumulation of new pounds;
  • Lack of long-term effect.

Every single diet has its pros and cons of achieving specific goals when done wisely pre-arranged plan. For this reason, each person's way of eating is a completely individual personal choice.

 

What should we choose - a balanced diet or a diet?

The balanced diet however, it can become a way of life that will invariably improve your health, strengthen your immune system, increase your productivity, mental and physical capabilities, and lead to long-term positive results.
